Events in February

Lisbon and Algarve regions

Despite being the shortest month with only 28 days this year, February brings plenty of highlights to look forward to. From Valentine's Day to plenty of Chocolate and the Chinese New Year.

Romantic plans

February is the month for the romantic hearts to get extravagant on Valentine’s Day. If you’re planning to spend Valentine’s Day in Lisbon, you’ll find plenty of very good ideas worth exploring. We’ve highlighted two for you:

Do you want a full sexy pack in one place? Alright then. How about spending Valentine’s day at Maxime? The old cabaret is now a hotel in Praça da Alegria, just aside Avenida da Liberdade, right in central Lisbon. Maxime Hotel has a special pack for this day, which includes an aphrodisiac menu dinner, prepared by chef Luca Bordino, and the burlesque show “L’Amour”. You can opt to add to this experience, spending the night in one of the hotel’s Deluxe rooms which will include the kit “Let Me Entertain You”. We’re sorry about this, but they didn’t tell us how they’ll entertain you. You’ll have to figure out on your own. ;)

If you like animals - No, we don’t mean in a sexy way. – Lisbon’s Zoo has a new Valentine’s Day special event open to a maximum of twenty couples and reservation is required. From 6h15 PM, the Zoo will be open to welcome the couples enlisted, and the program includes a reception cocktail, dinner, some games and themed activities as well as allowing to witness the awakening of the feline slope and discover the leopards, tigers and lynx that choose the end of the day to be more active. So, if you or your significant other really like big cats, be sure to register for this event until February 7th.

Chocolate overload

Many people choose to offer chocolate as Valentine’s day gift. Some believe that chocolate has a connection to love through its aphrodisiac properties. Maybe that’s why Portugal has so many chocolate fairs in February.

Loulé’s Municipal Market, in the Algarve, will host the IX Feira do Chocolate, from February 9th to 17th. You’ll be able to get to know all of Chocolate’s nutritious properties as well as its other uses and taste the most creative recipes, from cakes to waffles and fondue. Free entrance, by the way!

Campo Pequeno, in Lisbon, will host the Chocolate em Lisboa, from January 31st to February 3rd. At just 4€ per person, you’ll be able to taste the best chocolate brands of the world, watch chefs bake delicious chocolate desserts, see chocolate sculptures and participate in workshops.

Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year celebration.

On February 5th we enter the year of the Pig. The Pig is the animal that closes the rotation cycle of the 12 signs of the lunar calendar, it symbolically represents intelligence and the power of observation. This means that we enter in a moment of analysis, thought and meditation, with the intent of projecting the future, the new cycle. If you want to know more and participate in the celebrations of the Chinese New Year, you can visit the Orient Museum, in Lisbon, that has a specific program for this event until February 23rd.

2019 also marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Portugal and China. This hallmark, in addition to the celebration of the Chinese New Year, brings Beijing’s National Opera Company to Lisbon for the presentation of their “Yang Family’s Female Warriors” shows in several Chinese and Macau communities in Portugal, all organized by the Chinese Embassy in collaboration with Lisbon’s City Hall.

There are several events in Lisbon that will celebrate this date. Arguably the most memorable ones will be the street celebrations, at 11 AM on February 9th, when it will be possible to watch a parade of dancing dragons, martial artists, theatre and ballet performers, from Almirante Reis Avenue to Alameda D. Afonso Henriques. When the parade ends, feel free to stick around the Fonte Luminosa area and taste some of the Chinese cuisine and street food that will be on display in several stands until 5 PM. Remember to come back the next day at 10 AM, for the last day of the Chinese fair.

Volta ao Algarve

From February 20th to the 24th, 12 out of the 24 world’s top cycling teams will fill the streets of the south of Portugal, competing in the Volta ao Algarve. If you are a fan, keep an eye out for when the competition passes near you.

If you inspired to pick up your bicycle and ride a few kilometres, be sure to know that the 2019 Volta ao Algarve has also a ride exclusively for women and it will take place February 23rd at 9:30 am. The participation is free of charge, but you must register to guarantee your right to participate, to insurance and to receive gifts from sponsors.
