Historical Lisbon nightclubs will move out of the Pink Street, in Cais do Sodré

Three historic bars and nightclubs from Cais do Sodré - “Europa”, “Tokyo” and “Jamaica” - will move closer to the river as soon as the City Hall issues the authorization. The current building that houses these clubs in Cais do Sodré’s famous Pink Street is rumoured to become a hotel.

Founded almost 50 years ago, these three bars now occupy a building on Rua Nova do Carvalho, also known as the Pink Street (or “Rua Cor de Rosa” in Portuguese) due to the colour that dominates the pavement. It has six floors and was built in 1947.

Nightclub B.Leza will have new neighbours during 2019

The closure of Europa, Tokyo and Jamaica has been taken for granted for at least three years, but it was not known until now where they would be relocated to. A few days ago, Lisbon’s City Hall met with the owners of those bars at Cais do Sodré and worked out some details. The meeting took place precisely in the space that is destined for them, which are the warehouses at Cais do Gás, next to the river port and next to two other nightclubs - the African club B.Leza and the bar Titanic Sur Mer. It is there, a 10-minute walk from the current site, that a new life is anticipated in 2019 for three of the oldest and well-known nightspots in the capital.

The City Hall owns the warehouses of Cais do Gás and it has pledged in writing, several months ago, to lease them to Europa, Tokyo and Jamaica. The expectation now is that the lease will take place in the coming months.

The Tokyo and Europa night clubs will be housed in a larger warehouse, while a smaller pavilion will house Jamaica. The division seems to match the ambience that every venue currently has: live music and electronics in Tokyo and Europa for a mostly teenage audience, and pop/rock music classics in Jamaica for an audience over 35.
