It is located between Terreiro do Paço, next to the Tagus river, Rossio and Praça da Figueira, and longitudinally between Cais do Sodré, Chiado and Carmo, on one side, and the Cathedral and the hill of Castelo de São Jorge, on the other.
At the bottom end of the pedestrian and boutique-lined Rua Augusta artists and artisans peddle their wares to tourists and a triumphal arch leads onto the vast waterside Praça do Comercio. Once the site of the Royal Palace, this majestic square with its arcaded buildings and imposing equestrian statue of King Jose I is still a stunning sight, and also usefully houses the main tourist information point of the city.
It has a high concentration of commerce, since the entire street is flanked by several stores, many of them from major international brands. It has been closed to traffic since the late 1980s and is often occupied by street artists and artisans.
