Portuguese banker among the 50th best world leaders

The Portuguese banker António Horta Osório has been named one of the world’s top 50 business leaders and influencers by Fortune magazine.

Osório, who heads the UK’s Lloyd’s bank group, was the only Portuguese in the list, coming in 41st place.

The magazine highlights those it considers to have what it takes to be leaders and inspire others to do the same. It does so on an annual basis. Other names that made the grade include Bill and Melinda Gates, the US Procurator Robert Mueller, the European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager and the current leader of Apple Tim Cook.

In 2011, eight months after becoming CEO at the bank, Horta Osório took time out and sought help to deal with stress. Today he offers colleagues coping mechanisms for stress and openly talks about his own crisis.

The importance of mental health at the workplace

Lloyds currently provides senior management with mindfulness techniques and psychological analysis to deal with stress and anxiety and shortly plans to provide all staff with similar support. Last year the banker wrote an article for the Guardian newspaper calling for an end to the workplace taboo around mental health. “British society has made huge strides in recent years in its willingness to acknowledge, confront and treat mental health, but the workplace remains an area where we continue to struggle with its impacts and the costs are devastating.

I have made mental health a big focus for my company as a result of my personal experience. It is clear to me that the most important change needed is one of mindset. As with physical health, all of us can experience periods of mental health ill health when immediate treatment is needed, or we run the risk of developing long-term conditions that will need continuing support,” Osório tells the Guardian.

One of the programmes Lloyds offers is its disability-focused development programme which looks at workloads and pressure.
Changing the corporate mindset on mental health is, I believe, the most fundamental step forward to changing things for the better. We need to remove any trace of stigma” António Horta Osório concludes.
