Innovation District brings a new dynamic to Almada, Lisbon

The Innovation District is promised to be a lever for Lisbon’s internationalization and it comprises a total area of 399 hectares, of which 110 are green areas, and an investment of 800 million euros is expected for its execution in Almada

In tandem with a group of landowners in the area of Monte da Caparica and Porto Brandão as well as in close articulation with the Municipality of Almada, the NOVA University Lisbon launched a project that aims to be a global city in Almada - the Innovation district - that combines a unique and sustainable lifestyle within innovation and technological expertise.

The city of 15 minutes - Live, work, play

The main numbers that define the Almada district’s size are the arrival of 4,500 new inhabitants, the creation of 1,000 new housing units, a specific area to implement new economic activities that will help the opening of 17,000 new jobs and 86,000 m2 of tourist infrastructure. Besides that, there will be offices, commerce and services, culture, schools or student residences, green spaces and leisure spaces.

Based on the Live-work-play concept, the Innovation District in Almada will be a unique and plural city, designed to improve the quality of life of those who live here and for whom all the various amenities will be within a short 15-minute distance.

A space that boosts creativity, diversity and an improved quality of life

NOVA's Faculty of Science and Technology Campus will also undergo a renovation and requalification process, as well as the historic areas of Porto Brandão and Monte da Caparica. New mobility solutions such as a fluvial connection to Lisbon are being reflected upon.

As a space of innovation, the Innovation District intends to become a magnet for companies and people, contributing to promoting the development of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and leveraging its internationalization potential. Finally, it is a project focused on boosting a creative, diverse, energetic, and sustainable community, inspired by a better quality of life.

This project is anchored in the objectives defined by sustainable development until 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050, integrating an array of innovative environmental solutions.

Portugal and the center of Lisbon - a magnet for business, talented people and entrepreneurs

Reminding 2020 was a year that made us rethink our way of living and in which we learned two great lessons: the importance of changing the pace of life we lead and the possibility of working from almost anywhere in the world. Smart working is turning the business and working world, and Portugal is becoming a magnet for the ever-growing era of talented digital nomads. Proof of that is the recent announcement of the opening of Europe’s first digital nomad village, in the archipelago of Madeira.
