Portimão to host more than a thousand events as European City of Sports, through 2019.
More than one thousand sports events have been scheduled this year as part of Portimão being a European City of Sports 2019. The city has also announced considerable investments in the area of sport in the coming year.
€2M investment in infrastructures
Portimão was chosen by the European Capitals and Cities of Sports Federation over Cascais, another Portuguese city that was also running for this distinction. The jury recognized Portimão’s efforts in developing sports programs, the incentives to all the populations to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as promoting physical exercise’s benefits in promoting health, integration and education.
“We are investing more than two million euros in the building and improvement of sporting infrastructure in the city, with an average of three sports events scheduled every day during the course of the year”, explained Portimão Mayor Isilda Gomes.
Among initiatives set aside for the coming year, are those linked to school sports, with academic institutions encouraged to partake in the events planned for 2019.
Indirect revenue expected
While there will not be any direct revenue generated from these events, the Portimão Mayor anticipates an additional 40,000 nights to be spent in accommodation in the city.
The central government has meanwhile pledged that it will be supporting Portimão with an additional 130,000 euros in staging some of the events planned for the coming year.
With the decline of the fishing and canning industries after the end of World War II, Portimão had to turn towards tourism as a main economic source for the city hall with hotels and restaurants absorbing many of the old factory workers. This nomination to be the European City of Sports is another opportunity to strengthen the city’s infrastructures and the overall economy.
