A famous neighbourhood in Lisbon is Alcântara, one of the main nightlife centres in the Portuguese capital, with many nightclubs scattered around the old factories, at the coast of the Tejos river, one of the attractions for the city's inhabitants and tourists. The area also hosts the famous 25 April Bridge, which generated a renovation of the neighbourhood when it was built, in 1966. Alcantara´s history dates way before the formation of Lisbon as a city.
Archaeological excavations have found evidence of human occupation, such as chipped stone tools that date back to Paleolithic times. Around the year 1300 BC. a settlement consisting mainly of farmers and shepherds, where living in the zone, until being colonised by the Romans. Alcantara has also had very significant participation in the history of Portugal as a united country. In 1580, the Battle of Alcântara took place between the troops of António, Prior do Crato, and Filipe II of Spain (that was claiming the crown of Portugal). After the victory of Filipe, Portugal falls into years of Spanish domain.
