Exploring Carvoeiro

Get to know the countries key areas

Carvoeiro is a town and a former civil parish in the municipality of Lagoa, Algarve. It is located about 5km south of Lagoa.

Formed from a picturesque fishing village, with a long history of settlement, the parish slowly transformed into a tourist area in the municipality of Lagoa, owing to its number of sandy beaches protected by cliffs! From the 1960s onwards, tourism became the main source of the economic base in the area with many new shops, hotels and roads being built to help attract potential and existing tourists back to the area.

Overall, the weather in Carvoeiro is warm and pleasant all year round, with the Algarve area getting around 300 days of sunshine a year! It is the perfect place to relocate too if you want to get away from gloomy days.

Other facilities that slide and splash offer our sun loungers and sun blockers (both costing €5) to help protect you from the sun (a fee of €5.00 and a €5.00 refundable deposit), restaurants and cafes available, and a photo service so you can happily look back on the memories made at the waterpark with your family!

A marine park with seal and dolphin shows, an aquarium, and a sandy beach with slides and a wave pool. The Zoomarine is located in Guia, which is a 25minute drive from Carvoeiro (via the N25). There are also other activities available for the whole family to do such as seeing the conservation area where they have animals such as sea turtles.

Dolphin emotions encounter (1 hour - up to 6 years old -  from €107) is a memorable experience for 6 years old, or children who are not comfortable in deep water. You will meet the dolphin up close and personal in shallow water!

If you're looking to invest in Portuguese property, you've come to the right place. The property market in Portugal continues to go from strength to strength, with now being a great time to purchase home here. European buyers flock here every year, but the Golden Visa scheme allows people from further afield to get their hands on Portugal real estate. This gives overseas buyers the right to live, work and study anywhere within the European Union.

Local Information

Key details you must know about Portugal

Transportation

Buses: Carvoeiro has daily bus services to and from Logoa and Portimão. There are coach connections for longer distances to areas such as Lisbon available from either town, as well as connections to other Algarve towns.

Taxis: There is a taxi rank close to the centre of the old village at the bottom of the hill on Estrada do Farol, the main taxi company is called Auto Taxis do Carvoeiro.

The main public transportation system available in the Algarve is the BUS network, however, be prepared to find a Bus system quite different from what you have back home. The main company for inter-city buses is EVA. They connect most of the Algarve’s cities and travel to Lisbon and Spain as well. For more information, visit their timetables for all routes.

As for the Faro urban routes, there is a new bus company named Próximo that covers the whole city as their map shows. When you arrive at the Faro airport, you can catch one of Proximo’s buses to the centre of Faro and then catch an EVA bus or the CP train to another city. The train line connects Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António, as you can see on this line’s timetable on the CP website.

Shopping

Lusitania handmade gift shop - All products in this shop are handmade, a good place to buy any presents for friends and family.

Aqua Portimão - If it’s a wet day in Carvoeiro and you’re stuck for something to do, we recommend a visit to Aqua Portimão, which is a 20 minute drive from Portimão. This shopping centre has over 117 shops across three floors. It’s open daily from 9am to midnight

Portimão retail centre - This is next door to Aqua Portimão shopping centre, and it offers a smaller range of shops and restaurants. It’s open daily from 9am to 10pm.

Centro Comercial Portimão - Another shopping centre which offers a range of different shops, and a large supermarket. There is also a food hall located in this supermarket. In addition to this, there is also a cinema which shows films in English and children's films in Portuguese, so this shopping centre is perfect for a family with children.

Airports

Faro International Airport (FAO) opened on July 11, 1965, and is located just 4 km from the city of Faro in the parish of Montenegro in the Algarve. It is currently the third-largest airport in terms of traffic in Portugal just after Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon) and Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (Porto). Currently, most of the movements registered at the Faro International Airport are due to the large increase in the low-cost connections, increasing its influence in the southwestern corner of the country. To cope with increased traffic, the airport has been expanded and substantially modernised in recent years featuring now a track with 2,490 meters of length and 45 of width by which can receive all types of aeroplanes.

Weather

In Carvoeiro, the summers are warm, arid, and mostly clear and the winters are long, cool, windy, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 8ºC to 27°C and is rarely below 8°C or above 31°C. The highest ever recorded temperature in the Algarve was 44ºC at the Faro Airport region in July 2004. Autumn normally begins with the first rains of October and an average temperature drop to about 16ºC (min) and 25ºC (max).

Beaches

There are lots of beaches around the area of Carvoeiro. The following beaches are ones we recommend:

Praia do Carvalho - a true scenic destination with two tunnels in a cliff. Keep in mind that there are no restaurants or cafes at this beach, so please bring your own food and drink for the day!

Praia do Vale de Centeanes - peaceful, gold beach surrounded by cliffs. This particular beach is popular amongst divers. There is also a restaurant available near the beach.

Praia de Vale Covo - another popular beach in Carvoeiro, this is a small sand beach that is located in a cove facing southwest. The waters are calm due to the cliff's protection.
