Yes, you can live in Madeira without a car... as long as you live in central Funchal.

Strictly speaking, that's not true. There are several cities and towns across Madeira that offer a walkable lifestyle However, the farther you move from the island’s main urban areas, the more useful a car becomes.

Madeira has an island-wide public bus network, and many everyday needs can be covered on foot in the right location. The complication is the terrain: steep hills, winding roads and dispersed residential areas mean that somewhere which looks close on a map may be considerably less convenient in practice.

If living without a car is important to you, choosing the right location when buying property is therefore essential.

Where Is It Easiest to Live Without a Car in Madeira?

Central Funchal is the clearest choice.

The capital has Madeira’s greatest concentration of supermarkets, shops, restaurants, healthcare, schools and other everyday services, as well as the densest public transport network.

Living in or close to the centre can make it realistic to do much of your shopping and socialising on foot, using buses for journeys farther afield.

Some other town centres can also provide enough shops and services for many everyday needs. The difference is that your options become more limited, particularly if you regularly need to travel to Funchal or other parts of the island.

For a broader comparison of locations, our guide to living in Madeira looks at the different lifestyles available around the island.

Does Madeira Have Good Public Transport?

Madeira’s SIGA network operates across Madeira Island and connects its different municipalities through services run by several bus operators.

That makes travelling around the island without a car possible, but public transport is not equally convenient for every journey.

Someone living beside a useful bus route with a direct connection to Funchal may find the network perfectly adequate. Someone living farther up a hillside, several kilometres from the nearest useful stop, will have a very different experience.

Frequency and journey times can also vary by route and time of day. If you expect to rely on buses, check the actual services from the property you are considering rather than simply confirming that public transport exists in the area. SIGA provides a journey planner and current timetable information for the island network.

Why Is a Car So Useful in Madeira?

The biggest issue is not the size of the island, but its geography.

Madeira is extremely mountainous, and residential areas often extend steeply uphill from town centres and coastal roads. A supermarket that is only a kilometre away may still involve a demanding climb home.

A car also makes it easier to do things like:

  • Reach more isolated homes and neighbourhoods

  • Travel between different parts of the island

  • Carry larger shopping loads

  • Access hiking routes and less central coastal areas

  • Reach appointments or services that are not on a convenient bus route

For many residents, the question is therefore not whether living without a car is technically possible, but whether doing so would make everyday life unnecessarily difficult.

What Should Property Buyers Check?

If you want to live in Madeira without a car, do not judge a property by straight-line distance from the nearest town.

Walk the actual route to the supermarket, bus stop and other places you expect to use regularly. Check the gradient, pavement access and bus timetable, and consider how the journey would feel while carrying shopping or in poor weather.

These details are worth including in your wider property viewing checklist, particularly in Madeira where elevation can make such a large difference to daily life.

Parking may also be worth considering even if you do not currently plan to own a car. Your circumstances may change, and parking can affect both the practicality and future appeal of a property.

So, Do You Need a Car in Madeira?

Not necessarily. If you live centrally in Funchal and organise your life around nearby services and public transport, living without a car can be entirely realistic.

Elsewhere, it depends much more heavily on the exact property and the journeys you need to make.

If avoiding car ownership is a priority, the safest approach is simple: choose a walkable location before you choose a property.
