On 17 October 2026, the World Travel Awards, often dubbed the Oscars of tourism, held their Europe Gala Ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort in Montenegro.

It was another successful night for Portugal, which retained its title as Europe's Leading Destination and collected a total of 32 European awards, covering everything from destinations and hotels to attractions and airlines.

From its historic cities and beaches to its islands and natural attractions, Portugal has plenty to offer visitors. The awards are also a reminder of what draws so many people to the country in the first place, whether for a short holiday or a longer stay.

Portugal Named Europe's Leading Destination for 2026

Portugal has once again been named Europe's Leading Destination, claiming the title for the eighth time in the past decade.

Greece is the only country to have interrupted Portugal's run over those ten years, winning in 2021 and 2024. Portugal has now taken the title for two consecutive years, having reclaimed it in 2025.

It's an impressive record, particularly given the variety of destinations competing for the award. Portugal's appeal extends well beyond its best-known cities and coastal resorts, with everything from the vineyards of the Douro Valley to the quieter towns and countryside of the Alentejo offering quite different experiences.

Lisbon and Porto Recognised Among Europe's Leading Cities

Portugal's two largest cities also had plenty to celebrate, with Lisbon named Europe's Leading City Destination and Porto winning Europe's Leading Cultural City Destination.

For Lisbon, the award marks a return to a familiar position. The capital previously won the title in 2023 and 2024, before Porto claimed it in 2025.

There's no shortage of things to see and do in Lisbon, from exploring its historic neighbourhoods and viewpoints to visiting the city's museums, restaurants and lively waterfront. Lisbon also won Europe's Leading Cruise Destination in 2026, adding another title to its collection.

Porto, meanwhile, has been recognised for its cultural appeal. Its UNESCO-listed historic centre, centuries-old port wine traditions and distinctive architecture give the city a character of its own, while galleries, museums and a growing contemporary arts scene offer plenty beyond the familiar riverside sights.

These are also among the things that make living in Porto appealing, with the city's compact centre, walkable neighbourhoods and established cultural scene contributing to its distinctive way of life.

Madeira Retains Europe's Leading Island Destination Title

Madeira has once again been named Europe's Leading Island Destination, winning the title for the 12th time since 2013 and the fourth year in a row.

Part subtropical garden, part mountain range rising from the Atlantic, Madeira is a place where the landscape rarely stays the same for long.

There are terraced vineyards overlooking the ocean, walking trails following old levada irrigation channels, and mountain peaks that often rise above the clouds. The island is also home to the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva forest, one of its most important natural attractions.

Beyond its natural attractions, Madeira also offers a generally mild climate, coastal towns and a slower pace of life away from its busier tourist areas.

Madeira has missed out on the European island title just twice since 2013, losing to Sardinia in 2015 and Mallorca in 2022. Every other year, the award has gone to the Portuguese archipelago.

Algarve and Azores Among Portugal's Award-Winning Regions

The Algarve returned to the top of the European beach category in 2026, winning Europe's Leading Beach Destination for the 11th time since 2012.

It's an award that suits a region known for its coastline. From the sheltered coves and golden cliffs around Lagos to some of the best beaches in the Algarve further east, there's plenty of variety along Portugal's southern coast.

Some beaches are tucked beneath dramatic rock formations, while others stretch for kilometres, with space for walking, swimming or simply enjoying the Atlantic views.

The Azores, meanwhile, picked up a very different distinction, being named Europe's Leading Regional Adventure Tourism Destination.

Spread across nine volcanic islands in the Atlantic, the archipelago offers a different side of Portugal. Visitors can hike around crater lakes, explore geothermal landscapes, go whale watching or follow trails through some of the country's greenest scenery.

Together, the two awards show just how different Portugal's regions can be, even when both are known for their natural surroundings.

What Do Portugal's World Travel Awards Mean for Visitors and Residents?

With 32 awards covering everything from beach holidays to mountain landscapes and luxury hotels, Portugal's success in 2026 is a reminder of how much variety there is across a relatively small country.

And while these are tourism awards, many of the things that make Portugal attractive to visitors also matter to people considering living here: the climate, access to nature, food, culture and the different pace of life from one region to another.

Of course, enjoying somewhere on holiday and living there year-round are two different things. What works for a week by the sea might not be quite as convenient when you're thinking about schools, transport, healthcare or everyday services.

If you're considering a move to Portugal or looking for a holiday home, it's worth spending time getting to know the regions beyond their tourist attractions. Finding somewhere that suits your day-to-day needs is ultimately more important than the number of awards it has won.
