Albufeira

The town’s original Arabic name, Al-Buhera, means “castle on the sea,” a nod to its Moorish past. While rich in history, modern Albufeira is also the Algarve’s tourism capital, offering a thriving mix of hotels, restaurants, shops, and entertainment.

Zoomarine is a family-friendly attraction featuring looping water slides, wave pools, pirate ships, and lazy rivers. Located just a 20-minute drive northwest of Albufeira, the park’s highlights include the Aquasplash water cannon and a large Ferris wheel.

Open from March to November, Zoomarine also offers dolphin shows and swim-with-dolphins experiences, making it a popular destination for visitors of all ages.

The Atlantic waters along the Algarve coast are rich in marine life, and dolphin-watching cruises offer a unique opportunity to see these gentle creatures up close. Tours depart regularly from Albufeira Marina, particularly during the summer season.

The excursion typically lasts around 2.5 hours and passes the sea caves and sandy coastline of Carvoeiro, an area known for frequent cetacean sightings. Along the way, you may have the chance to swim near a picturesque beach and capture stunning photographs.

Albufeira’s Old Town surrounds the port and stretches down to Praia dos Pescadores, forming the town’s most vibrant and atmospheric area. Rich in history and character, this district features charming squares, traditional buildings, and Baroque churches, interspersed with striking sculptures that extend from the coastline northward.

Rising above the historic town of Silves, approximately a 30-minute drive northwest of Albufeira, the Castle of Silves is one of the best-preserved Moorish castles in the world. Dating back to the 8th century during Moorish rule, the fortress offers panoramic views of the Algarve countryside and a fascinating glimpse into the region’s past.

Situated at the western edge of Albufeira, Albufeira Marina is a colourful and lively waterfront area overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. A scenic 20-minute walk from the town centre, the marina is lined with vibrant bars and restaurants serving a wide range of cuisines, from traditional Algarvian seafood to artisan ice cream.

The main transport hub in Albufeira is the Albufeira Terminal Rodoviário, the town’s central bus station. From here, Albufeira is well connected to other major cities across the Algarve via Trans Rápido Express services. Carreiras Interurbanas buses operate slower routes, stopping at coastal villages along the way.

Local transportation within the town is provided by the Giro Bus Network, which runs four colour-coded routes covering most areas of Albufeira.

Albufeira offers several shopping streets near its central square. Praça dos Pescadores is among the most popular, attracting visitors with its souvenir shops, affordable shoe stores, and stalls selling leather goods at competitive prices. The area also features specialty food shops where you can purchase well-known Portuguese delicacies.

Another popular option is the Albufeira Weekly Market, held on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Here, visitors can buy seasonal fruits and vegetables, as well as clothing and footwear at affordable prices.

The nearest airport to Albufeira is Faro International Airport (FAO).
